What Mom is made of / Michelle (Mykki) Jarrell (Daughter) Mom, you are loving and kind, full of strength, always a fighter, humorous, everyone recognizes you when you walk in a room because you make friends easily, you have a heart that is enormous, you are so generous, your smile brings the room to light and your laugh is contagious, you are also a Grandmother of four, given to you by only me, they love you soooo.... much as do I. You are and have always been hard working weather it was as a Girl Scout leader a Swim team timer, a Life Guard, heading up the PTA, your involvement with the American Legion, VFW, ect. or now attempting to manage the Union from your hospital bed. Mom you have always been and now remain the strength and hope in our lives now and in the future. You are in my thoughts and prayers every minute, second, hour, and day as we take on this difficult time. Keep fighting the good fight, I expect you to come out on top as you have taught us to fight for what we believe in. Please know though miles now separate us, time, thoughts, and prayers only brings us closer. Thank you for all you have given me and taught me through out all these years. I love you Mom.
I love you Mom / Vivian Cooke (Daughter) Dearest Mom,
Congratulations for making it out of the hospital on Mother’s Day. What a great reason to celebrate. Once again, you have reached your goal.
In these challenging times, I have realized that you are such an inspiration with your courageous fighting spirit that every heart you have touched admires your strength. Keep up the drive and determination to fight. You once taught me to pick and choose your battles wisely and know which ones are worth fighting for. This battle against cancer is definitely one that is deserving of your greatest will. With much love and support, we as a network of family, friends and co-workers are all routing for you to fight and WIN! I have always cherished the memories of you being one of my biggest fans cheering for me on the sidelines of every sporting event I competed in. I still live by the values of sportsmanship you instilled in my head at a very young age. I feel I am a better person today because of the mother I have always had behind my every goal and dream I set for myself. I only hope that in the future I will be able to walk in your footsteps as a mother for my own children, but I must tell you Mom, you are a hard act to follow. For all the love, knowledge, and devotion you have shared with me I thank you.
It has been one of my greatest pleasures to care for you as your private nurse. I want you to know I had a much easier time in nursing school because of you. Here’s honoring you on Mother’s Day – You make me so PROUD to be your daughter.
I LOVE YOU AND PRAY FOR A SPEEDY PAINLESS RECOVERY!!
Your loving proud daughter, friend and nurse,
Vivian J
We all love you Mom. / Norman Cooke (Son) Margaret Smith (Mom) has been there for me from the time I was born and supported me in every way. I encourage all of you to pray for Mom and the family while we go through some tough times.

You may not remember me, but I remember you. I was a lost Union Represenative from the Federal Prison in Talladega Alabama. I met you, Ken Blaylock, Ron Hutchings, and Charlett Flowers in a time of need.
Margrett, you helped me so much and made a real difference in my life and I have always remembered you and the wonderful person you are. I'm sure I'm not the only life you touched in your many years with AFGE, but it was mine you willingly touched and I thank you.

Margaret,
It was sooooo good to hear your voice today. What a wonderful surprise! You made my Monday fabulous! I'm so happy to hear that you are recovering nicely and that you may be going home in a week. You gave us all a scare but your call today only proves that God anwers prayers. Take care of yourself and know that I will stay in touch. Also know that I called Bunny and shared our conversation with her.
Can't wait to see you again! Love to you and your family,

Margaret,
As usual, I'm late in signing your guestbook and telling you how much I appreciate all you've done for me - not just as a coworker, but as a friend. Every day, I encounter someone in one of my locals who asked about you and hopes you're doing well. You are in our thoughts and prayers daily.
I miss our conversations when I called the district office. First you would answer my question or find the file, then we would talk about our lives, our kids, our family. You always have kind words of wisdom that make things clearer and bring a smile to those who listen. I can't tell you how often I would feel overwhelmed when I called, only to realize once I got off the phone with you that things weren't that bad. And I know I'm not alone in thinking that. I often heard comments about how that "answer lady" at the district office was always helpful and cheery. You are a treasure!
I feel blessed to have met someone like you in my life and am doubly blessed that you remain an integral part of our union family. I look forward to seeing you at the convention in May. I've got a special surprise for you!!

Happy Mother's Day, Margaret, from your little sister / Linda Frink (Sister)
Happy Mother's Day, Margaret,
I thought Mother's Day would be a great time to take you for a walk down 'Memory Lane.' So here goes... I guess I am the person responsible for taking away your status as an only child when I decided to enter the world exactly 1 year and 1 day from your 5th birthday. But I knew you loved me from day one. I have always been told the funny story of the day that I was brought home from the hospital. It was right after you had received a new baby bed for your doll and you insisted that Mom place me in your new baby bed. Unfortunately, the bed was a toy and not intended for a real baby. When Mom placed me in your baby bed, we found out real quickly that the toy bed could not support my weight when I fell through the bottom and landed on the floor. See, I have a reason for being the "crazy sister" that I am! As little kids do you remember rides on the ferry to visit Grandma and Grandpa Broussard and the Port Bolivar relatives? I remember eating meals in Grandma's kitchen with lots of relatives and good food. I remember playing with our cousins and occasionally going to rodeos across the road from Aunt Eljie's and Uncle Jerry's house. I also remember going crabbing off of the ferry landing and coming home and eating fresh boiled crabs (is your mouth watering yet?) I also remember big family celebrations at Momo's and Papa's always accompanied with lots of relatives and very good home cooked food. I always loved summers. I remember playing red rover and hide 'n seek and jumping rope with all of the neighborhood kids in the evenings in the dead end. Do you remember swimming lessons at Ball High School? Recreational swims in the afternoons were always a favorite too. Roller skating at Stewart Beach, eating treats bought from the "snow cone truck" that visited the neighborhood. Do you remember the night Mom told us to be real quiet and you were holding an opened bag of M&M's? You were standing in the dining room and you kept twisting and twisting and twisting that bag until the M&M's came tumbling out of the other end. When they hit Mom's hard wood floors it sounded like a gun going off. Remember going to school at Ursuline Academy wearing our uniform everyday? When Hurricane Carla hit, do you remember helping the nuns clear debris from the rubbles left of that beautiful gothic building? Remember going to school in the old insurance building on the Strand until our new school was built? Then you graduated from High School, got a job and got married. My happiness over being an aunt for the first time when Michelle was born was short lived since you guys moved to Maryland very soon after Frank graduated from college. Life goes on. I graduated from High School, went off to college, got married and started my own family. Ever since you moved from Galveston, we have never lived in the same city or even near to the same city. We have managed to see each other over the years but not nearly often enough. One of my fondest wedding memories happened right before I got married. I was having a wedding shower and you were not able to come to Galveston for the shower so you mailed me a shower gift. Well your gift wasn't just any gift. It was the largest box I had ever received. Inside was an entire kitchen shower! You sent everything a person could ever dream of needing in a kitchen. Today, 35 years later, I am still using things you sent to me for my wedding shower. Yes, I still have and use my Tupperware cake holder, my flour sifter, and my cooking utensils. I have had to replace a few items but not all of them. And I think about you each time I grab one of those items to cook with. Too bad you couldn't send me some of your wonderful cooking skills in that shower gift! You definitely take the honors on being the best cook. Recently when you and I were able to be in Galveston together during Dad's surgery, it was great to reconnect and to reminisce about our childhood. Even though we were not in Galveston under ideal circumstances, it was still fun to be sisters living in the same house as when we were kids. Here's to making many, many more fun memories. P.S. If you ever need a laugh, remember the wine coolers!!! Love always, Linda
Because my father only had brothers, you've always been special to me as my only biological aunt. Unfortunately, I don't get to see you as often as I would like because of distance, but Callaway visits were always special. I have many, many fond family memories of that place and your visits added to the trip.
When I chose to go into the field of cancer research, I never dreamed a family member would have to experience the disease, but the field is working miracles every day and I know you're a fighter and will be one of those miralces. I love you Aunt Margaret!
Just Beat It ! / Bob Frink (brother-in-law)
Margaret - During the many years that I have been married to your sister, Linda, I feel like I have come to know you. There have been visits with you and Doug, your children, phone conversations, gift exchanges – the kinds of interactions that happen between loving family members. The personal contact has been limited because we have never lived close to one another, but the thoughtfulness you have shown over the years, giving gifts to our family at special times, calling up your sister for a “chat” have allowed me to get a measure over this time of the kind of person you are. And – over this time I have watched your children grow up from the infants whose diapers I once changed (yes I did!) to become the kind of children a parent can be proud of - independent, thoughtful, generous adults who learned well from their mother. You are very loving and caring and have much to be proud of! Your family and friends are praying for you and pulling for you in your fight to recovery from this. I look forward to future “good times” with you and your family – Love, Bob Close

Maggie, you are truly one of those special people. Others tend to gravitate toward you because of your bubbly personality. God has a way of infiltrating a few individuals who can light up others lives. When you smile your whole face smiles and the rest of us can't help but smile with you. I like real people and you are one of the few real and genuine people.
We get so involved in our own busy lives that we need to all take time to remember what others are dealing with and how important they are to us. I have a hard time believing this can really be happening to you and I can't believe how strong you are and you still keep that upbeat attitude of yours. Very impressive.
Maggie, you laugh at everything so laugh at this and kick it in the buttocks. Show everyone how strong and determined you can be 'cause we know you are. We will all be there with you in our thoughts and prayers kicking and fighting with you. Close
